How To Develop Great Habits For Success (Guide)

Success is not accidental! There are things you can do and success habits you can adopt that will enhance your life in ways you never imagined. What you are today, and everything that you will ever accomplish, is determined by the quality of the habits that you form. One thing which separates high achievers from regular people is Intention.

Meaning, if you get up every day and just coast wherever events and situations take you, you’re going to end up somewhere other than the ideal place. To reach your utmost potential, you need to steer your own path via daily habits which prime you for success. Building wealth takes years of smart decisions, both professionally and financially. Aside from the random element of luck, much of what will make you become successful involves the cultivating of certain habits.

Many people wonder how they can become highly successful, not realizing that they hold within them everything they need to achieve all of the success they desire. Successful people are where they are today because of their habits. Habits determine 95% of a person’s behavior. Therefore, by creating good habits and adopting a positive behavior, you too can become successful and live a prosperous life.

Additionally, people who are highly successful in life are because they practice some good habits regularly which other people don’t.
Apart from skills, intelligence and opportunities, it’s their good habits that make the difference. Learning what these habits are and how to employ them in your own life is worthwhile. These habits are game-changers and it is time to adopt them.

Believe You Can Achieve Your Goals

If you’re going to be successful in creating the life of your dreams, you have to believe that you are capable of making it happen. Believing in yourself is a choice. Successful people assume in favor of themselves and act as if achieving their goals is completely possible.

Experts on the science of success have revealed that the brain is a goal-setting organism. Set high goals that are both realistic and measurable, and make an effort to work towards those goals every day. Setting the direction, planning tasks, and realizing your vision is a nice habit as it increases your dedication at work.

Successful people know that if they give a goal to their subconscious mind, it will work night and day to achieve it. Top-level athletes and achievers in all fields set goals. Setting goals gives you long-term perspective and short term motivation. It allows you to organize your time and resources so that you can make the most out of your life.

You need to be a habitual goal setter, and dedicate yourself to working from clear, written goals every day of your life, forming daily habits. All highly successful people are intensely goal oriented. They know exactly what they want, they have it written down, they have written plans to accomplish it, and they both review and work on their plans as a daily routine.

High achievers like to set short-term goals because they know that creating short-term goals and achieving them with success will help them come closer to the bigger, long-term goal. Start with drawing up your “big picture” of what you want to achieve in your life (say within the next 5 years).

Then, break this big goal down into progressively smaller targets you need to hit. You should have a specific plan for the next five years, next year, next month and so on.

Steps To Setting Achievable Goals:
  • State the goal.
  • Set a deadline.
  • Identify the obstacles.
  • List the benefits of achieving the goal.
  • List the skills you need to acquire to attain the goal.
  • Develop a plan.

As important as goal setting is, it is FOCUS and INTENTION which ultimately produces the best results. All high achievers are intensely result-oriented and they make things happen. They are also very proactive, and just expect good things to happen for them.

Be Organized And Results Driven

Far too many people think or hope that good fortune will come their way without any action on their part. High achievers accept that they alone are responsible for their lives so they are results driven. The thing that sets apart those who make things happen from those who let things happen is how they respond to problems and challenges.

Those who make things happen look for solutions. Those who let things happen COMPLAIN. One of the best examples of this is how Richard Branson came to start an airline. In the early 80’s Richard Branson was traveling Puerto Rico to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) when his flight was canceled, leaving him and hundreds of other passengers stranded.

Branson however didn’t moan about his situation – he looked for a solution and made things happen. He figured out how much it would cost to charter a plane to BVI and how much it would cost each passenger if the expense were shared. And then he went for it, walking up and down the aisles of the grounded airplane selling tickets. On a simple chalkboard he wrote, “$39 one way to BVI.”

And so Virgin Atlantic was born!

Successful individuals have a mindset which turns every problem into an opportunity. They are in the business of making good things happen. When it comes to organization, it includes planning as well as setting priorities and goals. To prioritize you must have a “To-Do List” every evening before going to bed to prepare for the next day.

Start off every morning by writing a checklist of major tasks you have to get done for the day and check them off one by one, making sure you complete them all. Eventhough there are so many workflow tools and task management providers out there, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and distracted. A pen and paper checklist however, is simple.

It will keep you accountable and will have a huge impact on my overall productivity and focus. It is one of the important success habits to do daily. What's written is real. Once the words and images hit the paper, you have now crystallized a thought or idea. You can use the power of pen and paper to strategize and create anything you want.

Most people use their journal to record events or to vent. But there's so much more you can do with your journal and get immediate results in your life. When you journal consistently, you tend to ask questions about life, your direction, your business or what you seek to achieve in life. Use your journal to write what you want your life to be.

It is important to keep a journal as it helps you chronicle you life, plan your dreams and strategize your goals. Journaling empowers you to take your ideas and turn them into reality. It is also one of the best methods of self-care therapy.

Set Your Action In Motion

High achievers know that the world doesn’t pay you for what you know; it pays you for what you do. You need to overcome procrastination, push aside your fears and launch 100% toward the achievement of your most important goals. The combination of goal orientation, result orientation, and action orientation, in themselves, will virtually assure great success.

Self-discipline is a strong trait that can be developed with consistent use. If you have ever worked from home, or without supervision, you should know the importance of self-discipline. We humans have limited willpower, and tend to do whatever is comfortable for us. Contrary to popular belief, self-discipline is not being tough on yourself or living a restrictive, and limited lifestyle.

It does however need to be combined with structure to create the outcome you desire.

Structure + Discipline = FREEDOM

Structure is what you have to do AND when you have to do it. Discipline is focusing on what you need to get done. Ultimately, structure and discipline combined is the habit that sets you free. This is really the most important habit for material success. It is the ability to get on with the job and get it done fast.

It is your ability to develop and maintain a sense of urgency, consistency and a bias for action. Fast tempo in whatever you do is essential to your success.

Be Health Conscious And Make Exercise A Priority

One thing highly successful people develop is health consciousness. You must have good habits of rest and recreation that will enable you in combination with diet and exercise. This means that you must fastidiously watch your diet, and always eat the right foods in the right portions. How can you become successful if you have no plan for dealing with stress?

Start the day with a good sweat. Working out regularly clears your head and makes you feel more motivated. In life, there is so much that you can’t control and that can cause negativity and major stress as your day progresses. According a study, seventy percent of adults are a victim of stress in the U.S. This is one of the major reasons why high achievers make a habit of exercising daily because they know that if they remain under stress all the time, then they can’t deliver their best.

You must exercise on a regular basis and continually use every muscle and joint of your body to keep you limber and fit. Remember, your health is the single most important thing you have, and it is completely subject to the habits that you develop with regard to the way you live. Billionaire Richard Branson, for example, says that his morning routine of waking up at 5 am to play tennis or bike, has doubled his productivity.

Part of the reason exercise enhances cognition has to do with blood flow. When you exercise, blood pressure and blood flow increase everywhere in the body, including the brain. More blood means more energy and oxygen, which makes your brain perform better.

Another fact you should be aware of is that while the brain represents just 2% of a person’s total body weight, it accounts for 20% of the body’s energy use and thinking does use energy! Unlike any other part of the body, the brain runs exclusively on sugar (glucose). And strenuous cognitive activities require more glucose than simple ones.

What Type Of Exercises Should You Do?

That depends on the individual, but most people will advocate Aerobic exercise (also known as cardio) over anaerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise helps keep your heart, lungs and circulatory system healthy. Try brisk walking, swimming, running, or cycling. Examples of anaerobic exercise include heavy weight training and High-Intensity interval training. Of course an exercise regime that includes both types of exercise is ideal.

Further, a healthy, balanced diet with proper nutrition is essential for your body to function effectively. If you ignore good nutrition you are not going to achieve any significant success in your life – at least not in the long term. Without proper nutrition, your body is more vulnerable to infection, disease, exhaustion and poor performance.

Let's Look At Some Key Tips:
  • Remove sugar and processed food from your diet.
  • Re-populate your gut with healthy bacteria.
  • Eat diverse organic fruits and vegetables.
  • Good days begin with a healthy breakfast.

Aside diet and exercise you must make it a point to get enough sleep. Having enough sleep is essential for being successful in life. It has not only sharpens your brain, but also helps you stay alert throughout the day. Albert Einstein reportedly preferred to get more than 8 hours of sleep a night. Your body functions best when you’re well-rested.

Getting enough sleep isn’t only about total hours of sleep. It’s also important to get good quality sleep on a regular schedule so you feel rested when you wake up. While sleep is critical to success, it’s interesting to note that relaxing—by meditating or simply avoiding distractions—is another of the most-often mentioned habits of high achievers.

In order to have healthy sleep you have to stick to a sleep schedule of the same bedtime and wake up time, even on the weekends. Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. (i.e meditation, a relaxing non-caffeinated tea). Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and heavy meals in the evening.

Evaluate your room. (If your bedroom is too warm it may be more difficult to get to sleep). Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows.

A lot of people complain of feeling tired, especially early afternoon. Discover the benefit of Power Naps. A power nap can boost your memory, cognitive skills, creativity, and energy level. This can be avoided by skipping heavy lunches but if you do feel tired then a 15 – 30 minute power nap works wonders for many people.

Become An Early Risers

Historically, waking up early has been an favourite habit of high achievers. The more time one can devote to being successful, the more likely success will result. It gives you a sense of confidence to plan things so that you can easily accomplish your daily tasks. It is vital to make use of this time by involving in exercise and planning the activities of the entire day.

To become a highly successful person, you must get out of bed at least three hours before your workday actually started. And use your free time to tackle personal projects, plan your day, or make time for exercise. Getting up at five in the morning to tackle the top three things you want to accomplish in your day allows you to regain control of your life.

When you wake up early, you’re more likely to feel in charge of your day as opposed to struggling against the clock.

What Is A Morning Ritual?

Chief among the success habits of successful individuals are morning rituals. It can be as simple as having a 15 min walk outside, drinking a cup of green tea, or spending an entire hour practicing morning meditation. It really depends on what would make your day better if you practiced it.

Not a morning person? Start with small steps and get up 15 mins earlier. It is remarkable how much more space, getting up 15 minutes earlier creates in your mornings. It takes the rush out of your day and gives you more control. In order to stay focused, spend 15 to 30 minutes each morning on focused thinking.

To become successful you must learn to think in isolation, in the mornings and for at least 15 minutes every day. High achievers have a regular habit of focused thinking for around 30 minutes during which they think about all the essential aspects like health, relationship, business, etc.

So that they can analyze everything in a better way and may come up with a better strategy to accomplish things. Focused thinking is the most altered state of your mind because it allows your brain to concentrate at its best by removing all the distractions.

Read A Lot
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr. Seuss (American author and illustrator)
It's important to note that successful people read. While they also read for pleasure, most use their reading habit as a means to gain knowledge or insight. You don't necessary need to read for entertainment. You could read biographies, history, and self-help books. It’s especially important to step away from your every day and gather new information and skills only tangentially related to your industry.

It can be difficult when learning new things, and sometimes it takes a little push to take that step and open yourself up to try. However, learning challenging things can build up confidence and an ability to be at ease with being outside of our comfort zone. Education and learning are not just for students, but something to be embraced at every stage of life.

Constantly grow your skill set to not only remain competitive with your peers but also to nurture a sense of personal accomplishment and learning. If you enjoy a good novel, that can help you too. Science shows that reading for pleasure can also boost your career.

For anyone who needs inspiration about the value and importance of reading, look no further than the example of billionaire author, J.K. Rowling, who says she read “anything” as a child.

She advises, “Read as much as you possibly can. There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a good book; reading can transport one to another world. But increasingly, researchers are finding that reading may offer some very real benefits for health and well-being.

Led by researchers from Yale University School of Public Health, their study revealed that adults who reported reading books for more than 3 ½ hours per week were 23 percent less likely to die over 12 years of follow-up, compared with those who did not read books.

While the researchers were unable to pinpoint the precise mechanisms by which reading may boost longevity, they pointed to previous studies that found that, reading can increase connectivity between brain cells, possibly lowering the risk of neurodegenerative diseases that can shorten lifespan.

As you age, your brain slows down, and cognitive tasks that you may have once found easy, such as remembering a name or a house number, may become more challenging. Nothing will help you as much as reading. Devote 30 minutes or more each day does not only educate you but it helps slow down or even prevent cognitive decline.

Success is important because if done properly, it contributes a sense of well-being. It also brings happiness, fulfillment and increases confidence. Knowing that you were successful in achieving your goals despite the obstacles today, you are equally capable of tackling whatever you set your mind to in the future.

Now that you have a goal, you must framework each step necessary to successfully meet that goal. The complex thinking involved in doing requires cognitive skills. Cognitive skills are a set of higher-order thinking processes that allow us to reason, pay attention, learn, and remember. They are the skills we use not to only make sense of the world around us but also to complete tasks with problem-solving.

Cognitive skills are the keys to success because being successful entails overcoming problems and analyzing your environment. There are multiple types of memory, but working memory is the most crucial key to success. Working memory is a form of short-term memory designed to temporarily hold the information you see and hear for your brain to work with it.

Only a few pieces of information are stored in working memory at any given time. Remembering the digits of a phone number long enough to make a call is a prime example. Working memory is comparable to a mental sticky note. The process of working memory also assists in organizing information for long-term use if deemed important.

To be successful, working memory is imperative. You must recall information to meet your goals. Brain training exercises such as reading can improve your working memory.

Have Multiple Streams Of Income

Successful people always work towards creating multiple income streams because they know that relying completely on a single source of income can never provide them with financial stability. Everyone has the freedom to choose their standards when it comes to self-reflection. In order to be successful, you must not compromise on your standards.

Hold yourself to a high standard because it helps you achieve high levels of commitment, momentum, and outcomes, all of which are necessary for success. Diversifying sources of income allows you to weather the economic downturns that inevitably occur. Most creative and successful ideas have been formulated by looking at best practices and successful innovations in industries.

So, look to different industries to develop your own unique business concepts.By looking outward, you not only draw on your own ingenuity and motivation as a leader, but it also gives you the power to drive key innovations that have the potential to transform your business and leapfrog the competitors, whether they’re traditional or non-traditional .

Have at least three streams of income so that you don't spend as much time dealing with the financial crisis as they might come. For all your streams of income, focus on exceeding expectation, paying extra attention to detail, and providing quality work above all else. Money isn’t the only important resource for wealth development, time is crucial too. Time is money for every successful person.

You have to be accustomed to managing your time properly. To be successful, you must set an amount of time each day that must be utilized efficiently. Successful people don’t waste their time fulfilling the dreams of others. They make their own goals and work hard to achieve them. Because if they spend time living the dream of others, then they can’t achieve what they have planned to achieve in their own lives.

Moreover, if you want to really excel in business and life, you have to go the extra mile. And work towards achieving your dreams. Don’t focus on the “What’s In It For Me” policy. Don’t put stock in whether something is fair or whether you will be compensated or recognized for more effort.

When You Fail Get Back Up

Everyone fails. Failure is only failure if you believe it is. However, be to successful, you have to see failure as an opportunity to learn. Take Jeff Bezos, the Founder of Amazon.com. Amazon was not always the huge success it is today and along the way made some ‘wrong turns’ aka ‘learning experiences’. Examples include Amazon Auctions, Amazon zShops, and more the Fire Phone.

But Jeff Bezos did not let these ‘failures’ define him. In referring to failed projects Bezos told the Business Insider Ignition conference in December 2014 that “I’ve made billions of dollars of failures at Amazon.com. Literally billions.”

One common mistake that people who want to be successful do is that they reward themselves before they have earned the reward. They get that flashy car, take exotic vacations and purchase homes they can’t afford. To achieve real success you much understand that true wealth and success is created by compounding your efforts and avoiding the temptation of instant gratification.

Zig Ziglar said the chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want right now.
Your actions become your habits, your habits become your values and your values become your destiny - Mahatma Gandhi
